Experience
In past years Attorney Riaf has taught Business Law at both Salem State College’s Bertolon School of Business and Endicott College’s School of Business and Technology. Presently, he is an Adjunct Professor at Endicott College’s School of Arts and Sciences instructing Law in Literature and Film.
As a former Commercial Fisherman and Longshoreman he has maintained strong ties to the waterfront and a long-standing involvement in maritime related legal matters. In this regard Attorney Riaf provides consulting, legal counsel and research services to businesses, academia and NGOs on federal and state open ocean aquaculture law, policy and regulation.
In 1996 he served as attorney for the SeaStead Project, the first federally licensed aquaculture facility in the US Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Attorney Riaf has produced academic research studies for Rutgers University SeaGrant , Massachusetts Institute of Technology SeaGrant, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He is a Project Associate with Fisheries Technology Associates and has written for the aquaculture trade publication Fish Farming International based in London, UK.
Education
Attorney Riaf is a graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts and Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C.. He has been a member of the Massachusetts and Federal District Court Bars since 1986.
Boards
Ken Riaf served as a member of the City of Gloucester Capital Improvements Advisory Board and is currently a board member of The Cape Ann Farmers Market.
Ken is also member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony and a recipient of the Cape Ann Historical Commission’s Culture Award. His work in film has been screened and broadcast in United States, Canada, and Europe, most recently at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Public Interest Law
During his career, Ken served as a public interest staff attorney at Action Inc., in Gloucester and North Shore Community Action Program in Peabody, two of the North Shore’s leading anti-poverty agencies.
While with Action he represented individuals on a range of civil court matters while working with lending institutions in the community to identify and implement economic development strategies for individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations under the Community Reinvestment Act.
While at North Shore Community Action Programs, he was the Director of the Consumer Protection Program and worked in cooperation with the Massachusetts Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Division, Public Protection Bureau. His responsibilities included, department management, in-court representation and resolving consumer complaints in the 19 towns and cities served by the program. Attorney Riaf also conducted challenges to bank mergers and acquisitions under the Community Reinvestment Act.
Open Ocean Aquaculture Law and Regulation
Attorney Riaf conducts legal consulting and research services for businesses, individuals, and NGOs on federal and state ocean aquaculture policy, law and regulation. He has conducted work in this field for several leading research institutions including Rutgers University, SeaGrant, Massachusetts Institute of Technology SeaGrant, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. |
